What CDA is and how to use the viewer
CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) is the HL7 International standard for clinical documents in XML, such as discharge summaries, reports and referrals. Release 2 (CDA R2) is derived from the HL7 v3 reference model and uses the urn:hl7-org:v3 namespace. One of its principles is that a document must be readable by people, not only processable by systems.
Every CDA document has a header, with the patient (recordTarget), the author, the custodian, the document type (usually a LOINC code) and the date, and a body, which may be divided into sections. Each section carries narrative text written with a restricted set of elements (paragraph, list, table, content and others) and may contain coded entries.
How to use: paste the XML or open a file and click Analyze. The viewer shows the header data, the section index and the narrative text of each section. The text is rendered from a closed list of elements, without running scripts or loading external content, and links are shown only for http and https addresses. HL7 v3 messages are recognized and shown as an XML tree, with the interaction, sender and receiver. Files with a DOCTYPE are rejected for security. The document never leaves your browser.
